Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan’s portrayal of Karan Singh in the 2004 film Hum Tum remains a memorable one, even fetching him a National Film Award. However, a recent interview sheds light on some behind-the-scenes moments that paint a picture beyond the on-screen success. Directed by Kunal Kohli, Hum Tum was released to mixed reviews but did find financial footing. The film belonged to a wave of Hindi movies targeting a burgeoning multiplex audience in urban India. Saif’s revelation highlighted an interesting anecdote about the now-iconic kiss he shared with his co-star Rani Mukerji.
20 Years of Hum Tum: When Saif Ali Khan called his on-screen kiss with Rani Mukerji ‘worst in history of cinema’: “It made me so uncomfortable because you were so uncomfortable”
Back in the day, Yash Raj Films’ shared a video in which Rani asked, “Do you remember how scared we were to do the kissing shot?” and Saif replied saying, “I remember how scared you were to do the kissing shot!” According to Saif, Rani, who later married Hum Tum’s producer Aditya Chopra, was apprehensive about the kissing scene. He told that Aditya desired a “proper kiss” for the movie, but Rani felt nervous. Saif jokingly reminisced that she even tried to convince him to nix the scene altogether due to her self-consciousness. Despite the awkwardness, they filmed the scene. Saif admitted to finding humour in the situation even years later.
Rani told Saif, “Listen, you say that you don’t want to kiss me,” to which the actor replied, “I can’t say that! My boss has told me, so I have to do it.” Rani further said, “Listen, I don’t think we should do it!” Saif Ali Khan, imitating Rani’s reluctance, said, “Okay, we will do it.” Without holding back, the actor stated, “It was the worst kiss in the history of cinema, it was so uncomfortable. It made me so uncomfortable because you were so uncomfortable!”
