KUALA LUMPUR: Following the air tragedy at the Lumut Naval base, the Royal Malaysian Navy will continue conducting the flypast at certain events but with stricter safety measures.
Navy chief Admiral Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Ayob (pic) said the flypast is a routine and safe air formation that could lift the spirit and confidence of naval pilots.
“We will continue to conduct the flypast air formation in certain events in the future.
“However, we will apply tightened safety measures when the flypast is conducted,” he told a press conference on Thursday (May 30) after unveiling the full report of the tragic air crash.
Admiral Abdul Rahman said the Investigation Board recommended further increasing training and risk management to ensure the navy’s air unit operates safely and effectively.
When asked whether the Navy would review future acquisitions of air assets, he said black boxes would be among the main features to consider.
On April 23, 10 personnel were killed when two naval helicopters crashed in Lumut while conducting a third rehearsal for a flypast in conjunction with the 90th Naval Day.
The Fennec helicopter crashed into the swimming pool in the sports complex, while the AW139 crashed at the TLDM stadium in Lumut.
