Actor Vijay Varma recently reacted to the former Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) chairman, Ganjendra Chauhan’s statement following Payal Kapadia’s win at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. Varma suggested that Chauhan could have refrained from speaking at the moment.
For those unfamiliar, Payal Kapadia’s film ‘All We Imagine As Light’ made history by winning the Grand Prix at Cannes 2024. Kapadia had previously protested against Chauhan’s appointment as the FTII chief in 2015, resulting in disciplinary action from the institute.
Varma shared a screenshot of Chauhan’s statement on Payal’s win on Wednesday. The actor-turned-politician had told PTI, “Congratulations to her, and I feel proud that I was the chairman at the time when she was doing the course there.”
Accompanying the screenshot, the ‘Darlings’ actor posted a meme asking, “Karwali bezzati? (Got insulted?)”. He added, “Sir, this was the time to remain silent.”
Filmmaker Varun Grover also shared a screenshot of Chauhan’s statement and reacted to it with a meme.
Earlier, in an interview with Times Now, Chauhan had addressed Payal’s opposition to his appointment as the FTII chairman in 2015, stating, “There is a vast difference between talent and discipline. Talent is all very well, but discipline is also very important.”
Payal Kapadia’s debut fiction feature ‘All We Imagine As Light’ won the Grand Prix Award at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, May 25. On May 23, ‘All We Imagine As Light’ team danced their way to the Cannes screening. The film received an eight-minute standing ovation after the screening.
