Acclaimed filmmaker Mohit Suri gave an interesting, in-depth interview to Tarsame Mittal of The Music Podcast wherein he spoke about his musical journey. He also ended up sharing some fascinating trivia.

Mohit Suri says “Senior composers were not working with me. Hence, I got artists from Pakistan”; also reveals that Woh Lamhe’s remix was shot in just Rs. 60,000

Mohit Suri explained why he’s been working with new musical talents since his first film, Zeher (2005) saying, “I was 21 when I was making my first film. I can’t blame the senior music directors. They felt, ‘Yeh ladka kaise ek film bana lega?’. One senior composer did record a song for my film but he didn’t feel ki main kar paunga. Hence, with no choice, I got two new music directors on board. One was Mithoon, who was Naresh Sharma ji’s son and used to do background music. He was just 19. The other was Atif Aslam. I got them together. Atif and his band had raw energy but didn’t have the structure of a song. Mithoon had that strength. This is how I made an ensemble of music artists. I repeated it in the second film I made that year, Kalyug (2005).”

He added, “I never consciously planned this strategy. It just happened.” The song that was created by them was ‘Woh Lamhe Woh Baatein’.

When asked whether he was the first one or one of the first ones to get multiple composers in a film, he replied, “Senior composers were not working with me. Hence, I got artists from Pakistan. Again, it was not a conscious decision.”

Mohit Suri then revealed interesting information about Zeher’s chartbuster track. “We remixed ‘Woh Lamhe Woh Baatein’, which later became a rage,” he said. “Those were the days when a music album should have 5 songs. But Zeher had only 4 songs. I was not ready to force a new song into the narrative. I was 21 and I used to go to nightclubs. I noticed that DJs used to remix the latest songs. The trend then was to remix old songs.”

He continued, “I got hold of a non-film DJ named Suketu. His brother studied with me in college. The problem was to add a song to the album. Hence, I decided to go for a remix. Mukesh ji (producer Mukesh Bhatt), however, said that he doesn’t have the budget. Hence, I shot the song in just Rs. 60,000!”

The music video of the song was novel for that time. Mohit said, “Half the people in the song are either my assistants or spot boys. We used to play the song on a speaker on the street and they used to dance.”

Zeher starred Emraan Hashmi, Shamita Shetty and Udita Goswami in lead roles.
