KOTA KINABALU: Police on bicycles will be making their presence felt here, particularly in three zones heavily frequented by locals and tourists.

Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm Kasim Muda said such a move would extend the range of police patrols and alleviate public concerns over their safety.

“The bicycle patrols will cover areas around Tanjung Aru, Imago shopping mall, Jesselton Point, Jalan Gaya, and Likas Bay, as well as other popular spots.

“The patrols will be conducted on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from 4pm to 10pm. This approach demonstrates the police presence within the community to prevent crime,” he told reporters after the launching the Bicycle Patrol Unit at the Tanjung Aru Police Station on Sunday (June 9).

He said bicycle patrols would also enhance the visibility of the police in public and tourist areas, particularly from Tanjung Aru to Teluk Likas.

Also present was Kota Kinabalu district acting deputy police chief.

He said that the bicycle patrol unit might be expanded in efforts to prevent crime, ensuring tourists and the public feel more comfortable and secure.

“Tanjung Aru is the pioneer, and we will assess the community’s response first.

“The implementation of this bicycle patrol unit aims to facilitate interactions between the public, tourists, and police should any issues arise,” he added.
