BHOPAL: Two men died while cleaning a septic tank in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district Sunday evening. Police registered a case of unnatural death and launched a probe. After a similar accident last year wherein two persons lost their lives in Gwalior, MP high court took suo moto cognisance of the tragedy and prohibited manual scavenging while directing civic bodies to take charge of sewer cleaning.The HC had then said that the PIL was initiated in view of pathetic situations where people working at sewer lines lost their lives, adding: “Human lives are at stake”.
Sunday’s accident took place at Bansagar colony under Saman PS area. Police identified the deceased as Vinod Chourasia (32) and Rajkumar Nahar (30). Post-mortem was conducted Monday and the report was awaited.
“Both went to clean a tank using machines, but there was an issue and Rajkumar got trapped inside the tank. Vinod went to help but was trapped too. They were brought out and rushed to a hospital where Rajkumar was declared dead while Vinod succumbed during treatment,” Rewa additional SP Anil Sonkar said.
“The cause of death will be clear once we get the autopsy report. Based on the findings, appropriate action would be taken against guilty,” Sonkar added.
