Flying Bark, Animation Indie, Opening Madrid Studio – MASHAHER

Australia and U.S.-based animation group Flying Bark Productions is set to become more multinational with the opening of a new production studio in Madrid, Spain.

Flying Bark Productions, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Belgian medi and theme park group Studio 100 is known for producing premium CGI and traditional 2D animated series and feature films, as both an independent producer and servicing international studios and platforms including Disney, Marvel, and Nickelodeon. It currently has some 600 staff.

To set up the Madrid studio, Flying Bark is partnering with Ramon Giráldez, an experienced studio supervisor, who is a key figure in the Spanish animation industry.

“Spain was a natural next step for us due to the globally recognised creative and technical talent, attractive local incentives and the allure of one of the best cities in Europe. The studio will initially focus on hiring CG talent, but we plan to grow a traditional 2D talent pool in the near future and be involved with developing and producing a slate of original content with international appeal.” said Barbara Stephen, CEO of Flying Bark Productions. Senior recruiter, Laila Sleiman Sanz, is heading talent sourcing efforts and has several open positions.

The company is already in advanced production on Australian-Spanish co-production film “200% Wolf,” a sequel to its “100% Wolf.” The new film will be released theatrically in the second half of 2024 in all major territories, with distributors including Viva Kids (U.S.), StudioCanal (Australia), and Vertigo (U.K.).

The company’s catalog includes Emmy-award winning “Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur” (Disney TVA), “What If…?” (Marvel), “Monkie Kid” (LEGO) and “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” (Nickelodeon).

In the indie space Flying Bark has been involved in “Maya the Bee Movie,” “FriendZspace,” and the film and series versions of “100% Wolf.” It is also set to work on the recently announced limited animated series based on Shaun Tan’s illustrated novel “Tales from Outer Suburbia” (ABC).
