One dead after stand off with dozens of armed police officers in quiet cul-de-sac – MASHAHER

A man at the centre of a nine hour stand-off in a town in Leeds has died this morning, police have confirmed.

Armed police were called to a cul-de-sac in Stanningley, near Leeds yesterday afternoon following reports of a man with a gun.

Neighbours were told to stay indoors while trained negotiators tried to reach a “safe conclusion”.

Armed officers forced entry to the address at 10.50pm and found the man critically injured.

He was taken to hospital for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead shortly after midnight.

Officers were called to a domestic-related incident at an address in Half Mile Green but withdrew after spotting a male at the property in possession of what appeared to be a handgun.

A cordon was erected while emergency services attended, including armed officers and police negotiators.

Witnesses said a man was seen hanging out of an upstairs window while drones flew above the property.

West Yorkshire Police said: “At about 10.50pm, armed officers forced entry to the address, deploying distraction devices, and found the man critically injured.

“He was taken to hospital by ambulance for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead shortly after midnight.

“West Yorkshire Police has referred the Incident to the Independent Office for Police conduct, which is a mandatory requirement in these circumstances, and it has declared an independent investigation.”

Locals in the area said they were “shocked” at the huge response to the incident.

“I’ve never seen anything like this before. There’s quite a lot of police here. I was just in Tesco – this is my road to go home and I was like ‘what’s going on’,” one resident told Leeds Live.

Another woman added: “What’s all this? It’s never like this it’s usually so quiet.”

Police say there is no risk to the wider community.
