Twinkle Khanna recently shared a personal story about her daughter, Nitara, and how an insensitive comment about her skin colour almost led her to quit swimming. Twinkle and Akshay Kumar, married for over two decades, have two children: son Aarav and daughter Nitara. In her latest column for The Times of India, Twinkle emphasized the positive impact of reading, recounting how a book helped Nitara overcome her insecurities.
Twinkle Khanna reveals hurtful comment about daughter’s skin colour: “There was a time when my little one…”
Twinkle narrated an incident where a relative’s casual remark about Nitara’s complexion compared to her brother Aarav’s had a significant effect on the young girl. She recalled, “There was a time when my little one wanted to discontinue her swimming lessons. A tan had become her nemesis. ‘I want to be the same colour as bhaiya (brother),’ she said after hearing a foolish relative say, ‘She is so cute but not as fair as her brother!’”
To help Nitara cope with this situation, Twinkle introduced her to an illustrated biography of Frida Kahlo, showcasing a strong, talented woman who looked different from conventional beauty standards. Twinkle explained, “I gave her Frida Kahlo’s illustrated biography. Gleaming skin of a shade not unlike hers, with eyebrows that met in the centre, a formidably talented woman as a role model. These days, she claims she doesn’t need to use as much sunblock as her brother.”
Akshay Kumar also praised Twinkle for her academic pursuits and dedication to their family. During an interview on cricketer Shikhar Dhawan’s chat show, Dhawan Karenge, Akshay commended Twinkle, saying, “I am an illiterate man, I have not studied much. I do manual labour, whereas she is the one with the brain.” He continued, “I go to work, and she has taken such good care of my children. I am surprised about how my wife looks at life even today. She is 50 now and still goes to study. She has finished her master’s and is now doing her PhD.”
This heartfelt story highlights the importance of supporting children through their insecurities and the power of positive role models. Twinkle’s proactive approach in addressing Nitara’s feelings showcases the profound impact parents can have in guiding their children through challenging times.
