Karnataka: Government to split Bengaluru’s civic body into 5 zones, say sources – MASHAHER

The Karnataka government is likely to split Bengaluru’s civic body into five zones– North, South, East, West, and Central– to ease its pressure and bring efficiency.

According to sources, a draft bill for the split of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has been prepared and will be tabled in the upcoming session of the Karnataka Assembly after the cabinet’s assent.

The decision was taken in view of the increasing population of Bengaluru. The BBMP will be divided into five zones based on the city’s geography.

The population of Bengaluru has seen a significant increase with the official figure crossing one crore.

Speaking about the government’s proposal, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara said, “For efficiency of administration, we are planning to split Bangalore into 5 zones. It’ll help in increasing efficiency. Even in places like London, there are 35 to 38 corporations. This will help in effective administration given the fact that Bengaluru has infrastructure issues when it rains.”

Meanwhile, BJP MLA Ashwath Narayan has opposed the proposal alleging that the split of Bengaluru’s civic body is being done to serve the “vested interests” of a few individuals and it will not help in boosting its efficiency.

“This is inefficiency. This (division of civic bodies) has been experimented with in different parts of the world, but they have all united in the end. What’s this government’s priority? Have they done anything in terms of healthcare, education, and public transport? There’s no transparency in this government. They’re inefficient. This is being done to serve their vested interests,” BJP MLA Ashwath Narayan said while speaking on the matter.
