USA captain Aaron Jones was proud of his team’s performance despite a seven-wicket defeat against India in a T20 World Cup match in New York on Wednesday. Reflecting on the game, Jones highlighted the crucial 10–15 runs for the USA that could have made a significant difference in the outcome. The USA captain was pleased with their bowling effort as they made India work really hard for every run. Saurabh Netravalkar gave them a dream start by getting rid of Virat Kohli and then got Rohit Sharma as well. They couldn’t pick up wickets for a while but checked the runs to keep the pressure on. Ali Khan came in and dismissed Rishabh Pant with a magnificent delivery but they couldn’t build on that.
USA vs India, T20 World Cup 2024: HIGHLIGHTS
“10-15 runs short. We know if we’d gotten 125-130 it’d have been a tough total. Boys were disciplined today, pleased that the game got close. Support definitely good. We’ve wanted fans, talked about it for a couple of years. We’ll come hard against Ireland for sure. (Not bowling spin) The wicket was tricky to face seam bowling. So, thought they were the best option. Monank is most likely to be fit for the next game, he just has a niggle,” Jones stated during the post-match presentation ceremony.
India secured their place in the Super Eight with a seven-wicket victory, driven by key performances from Arshdeep Singh and Suryakumar Yadav. Suryakumar composed 50 not out off 49 balls and Shivam Dube’s gritty 31 off 35 balls were instrumental as India chased down USA’s total of 110/8 in 18.2 overs, finishing at 111/3.
USA’s left-arm seamer, Saurabh Netravalkar, put India under pressure early on by dismissing Virat Kohli for a golden duck and then removing Rohit Sharma for just 3 runs in his spell of 2/18 from 4 overs. Netravalkar’s early breakthroughs gave the USA a glimmer of hope. Rishabh Pant contributed 18 off 20 balls, forging a crucial 29-run partnership for the third wicket with Suryakumar Yadav. After Pant’s departure, Shivam Dube joined Yadav at the crease. Dube initially struggled but then settled into a supportive role, allowing Yadav to guide India to victory.
Yadav, recovering from a few low scores, showcased his class with a match-winning 50 not out, featuring 2 fours and 2 sixes. The Mumbai batsman remained steady, ensuring India’s progress to the Super Eight alongside Dube, with their unbroken 72-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Ali Khan was the other standout performer for USA, claiming 1/21, while Jasdeep Singh (0/24) and Corey Anderson (0/17) bowled economically. However, the team’s efforts were undermined by a 5-run penalty for slow over-rate, further complicating their challenge.
Despite the loss, Jones was optimistic about the support from fans and the team’s discipline, vowing to come back stronger in their upcoming match against Ireland. With Monank Patel expected to return, the USA team looks forward to bouncing back and making an impact in the tournament.
The US, second in Group A with four points after suffering their first loss in three matches, will also ensure qualification for the next round if they beat Ireland on Friday.
