Oxford University forced to cancel exams as pro-Palestine demonstrations deemed ‘beyond the bounds of acceptable protest’ – MASHAHER

Exams have been cancelled at Oxford University after the building was occupied by pro-Palestine campaigners.

University bosses say the takeover of the hall was “absolutely unacceptable” before adding that the “action plainly goes beyond the bounds of acceptable protest”.

Protesters entered the hall in the East School on Thursday morning before schedules exams were due to take place.

Around six demonstrators were spotted inside the Examination Schools carrying Palestine flags.

According to one student, a group stayed in the building overnight before a second group of 20 wearing “masks and backpacks” entered.

Oxford Action for Palestine (OA4P) said in a statement that it needed “support outside Exam Schools”.

However, it is not clear if those who involved are members of OA4P.

Students were told that assessments scheduled for Thursday in the Exam Schools, but not in East School, are expected to take place.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

A spokesperson from the University told Oxford student newspaper, Cherwell: “The University is disappointed with this morning’s occupation of the Exam Schools and the absolutely unacceptable disruption caused to our students.

“We are putting into place contingency plans to ensure all students will have the opportunity to sit their examinations with as little disruption as possible.

“It is unclear who the occupying group are representing, as they claim to be acting without the knowledge of the OA4P encampments.

“While the University supports the right to peaceful protest within the law and our rules, this action plainly goes beyond the bounds of acceptable protest.”

Thames Valley Police were informed about the protest which started at 9am.

A spokesperson said: “Officers attended the university following reports of protestors gaining access to the Exam Schools.

“We continue to work closely with the university as this develops. No arrests have been made.”

Last month, 16 demonstrators from the OA4P group were arrested after occupying a building at the university.
