Aditya Sarpotdar’s horror film Munjya has become a box-office sleeper hit, exceeding expectations set before its release. The film, featuring a cast of relatively rising actors, is currently on track to enter the Top 10 Week One grossers of 2024. Speaking exclusively to Bollywood Hungama before the film’s release, Sarpotdar discussed his hopes for Munjya’s box office performance. He spoke about the importance of matching expectations to a film’s budget.

“Box office numbers should correlate to the size of the project and the budget,” he stated. “Today, if I say I want Munjya to make Rs 100 crores, it is silly for me to expect that because it is not a film made at that budget.”

Sarpotdar noted the changing landscape of cinema, where audiences are increasingly prioritizing strong content over star power. He cited the success of Laaptaa Ladies and Malayalam films in the Hindi belt as evidence of this trend. “People are giving a lot more preference to content over casting,” he observed. “Films like Munjya coming at this point give us confidence that good numbers are possible because audiences want something fresh.”
Current status of Munjya’s box office performance
As of today, Munjya has collected approximately Rs 36.50 crore, trailing closely behind Article 170 (Rs 38.82 crore) and surpassing films like Yodha, Mr. & Mrs. Mahi, and HanuMan (Hindi). However, the release of Kartik Aaryan’s Chandu Champion this week is expected to impact Munjya’s business.
Speaking of the film, it stars Sharvari Wagh and Abhay Varma along with Mona Singh and Sathyaraj. The film is produced under Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films. It is the fourth installment of Maddock’s supernatural universe.
