Sandwich maker Greencore, a major supplier to UK supermarkets, has recalled some products because of an E.coli risk, the Food Standards Agency has said.
It’s a precautionary step a week after the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) announced an outbreak that left some in hospital.
Products from Boots, Asda, Co-op, Aldi, Sainsbury’s and Amazon could be contaminated, said the Food Standards Agency (FSA).
It’s understood other manufacturers will issue their own recalls in the coming hours.
The UKHSA said on Friday that cases had nearly doubled in the last week – with a further 98 recorded – bringing the total to 211.
England has seen 147 cases, Scotland 35, Wales 27, and two in Northern Ireland.
However, the UKHSA expects these numbers to rise as testing is ongoing.
Last week, the agency said the cases were linked to a “nationally distributed food item” but didn’t give further details.
People affected range from age two to 79, with the majority young adults.
Based on 160 cases, 42% of them had needed hospital treatment.
An Asda spokesperson said: “We have been made aware by Greencore, who supply Asda and other retailers with pre-packed sandwiches, that they are recalling a number of products as a precaution because of the possible presence of E.coli.
“The full list of products is available on the Asda Product Recalls webpage. If you have purchased any of these products, do not eat them, please bring them back to your nearest store where you will be given a full refund.
“You do not need your receipt.”

Darren Whitby, head of incidents at the FSA, said it was working with Food Standards Scotland (FSS) and the UKHSA to identify the cause of the outbreak “caused by shiga toxin-producing E.coli (Stec)”.
E.coli are a diverse group of bacteria that are normally harmless and live in the intestines of humans and animals.
However some strains, like Stec, can make people very ill.
