Yesterday, the trade, industry and fans got a surprise as it came to light that Singham Again has been pushed from August 15 and will be released on Diwali this year. This means that the multi-starrer action entertainer will be the sixth Rohit Shetty film to release on the Festival of Lights. And all his films on Diwali have worked well.

Rohit Shetty’s first Diwali release was Golmaal Returns (2008). The second part of the franchise collected Rs. 51.12 crores, a huge amount for the time, and was declared a Hit. Golmaal 3 (2010) was released two years later and did more than double the business of the second part. It earned Rs. 106.34 crores and was Ajay Devgn as well as Rohit Shetty’s first Rs. 100 crores grosser.
In between, Rohit Shetty released All The Best (2009) on Diwali. With collections amounting to Rs. 41.41 crore, it was a Semi-Hit and managed to cross the earnings of the big-budget film, Blue, which released on the same day.
In short, Rohit Shetty had a hat-trick of Diwali releases, which is also a feat.
7 years later, Rohit Shetty booked the Diwali slot for Golmaal Again (2017). The horror comedy opened with a bang and helped him and Ajay Devgn enter the Rs. 200 crores club.
On Diwali 2021, Rohit Shetty released Sooryavanshi, starring Akshay Kumar. A lot was at stake with this film as it was the first big theatrical Hindi release after the pandemic that began in March 2020. Thankfully, the film met expectations and spread cheer in the industry. It collected Rs. 196 crores and got a ‘Super Hit’ verdict.
All eyes are now on Singham Again, not just because of the popularity of the franchise and Rohit Shetty’s association but also because it comprises several big names like Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Deepika Padukone and Tiger Shroff. The buzz is tremendous and if the trailer clicks, the film is sure to have a huge opening and collect record numbers at the box office.
