Australia wanted to respect ‘improved’ Scotland team: Mitchell Marsh after nervy win – MASHAHER

Australia captain Mitchell Marsh praised the Scotland team for challenging them in a closely-contested match at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium on June 16, Sunday. Marsh hailed the Scotland team for improving with time and bringing their best game. However, Australia broke Scotland’s heart as they went onto win the match by 5 wickets. Australia’s win meant that Scotland could not qualify for the Super 8s and it was England who made it to the next stage of the tournament.

The stakes were high for the Group B clash between Australia and Scotland as there was a tussle between the England and Scotland team to seal the Super 8s spot. Scotland battled like bravehearts and showcased their battling spirits against all the odds. As an associate nation, they managed to scare 2 cricketing giants, Australia and England, in the Group B stage. Hence, they can head back with their heads held high after putting up a tough fight.

Australia survives Scotland’s scare

Marsh, while speaking to the broadcasters at the post-match presentation, suggested that the Australia team wanted to showcase their respect for the Scotland team.

“We knew that we had qualified. We spoke about sticking to our plans. Scotland is a good team, they have improved a lot, and we certainly wanted to respect them. We just wanted to stay consistent and if we fail, we fail our way,” Marsh said.

“Being challenged gets the best out of Australia”

Marsh also pointed out that being challenged brings the best out of the Australian team and that is what happened on the field on Sunday.

“Whenever our team is challenged, it brings the best out of us. Today we were challenged, and it was a good experience and a good game of cricket. We start fresh now. T20 is a hard format, and you need to stay focused at all times. (On chat about England) It was all more externally than internally, we won today. That’s all that matters,” Marsh added.

Scotland posted a competitive total of 180 runs on the board. Australia lost their top-order early on in the chase. However, Marcus Stoinis and Travis Head’s 80-run partnership ensured Australia won the match and remained unbeaten in the group stage.
