The financial challenges of being an actor

Sumona began her career in showbiz at a young age, starring in the film Mann in 1999. Her breakthrough came in 2011 with the serial Bade Achhe Lagte Hai, followed by successful stints in comedy shows. However, the irregular nature of her income posed a problem when she decided to buy a house. Sumona recounted, “Actors don’t have an office-structured salary slip or a fixed payment monthly. I still remember how the bank guys were reluctant to give me a loan because I had no fixed monthly salary. Somebody with a monthly salary of Rs 20,000 is a safer bet for a bank, than an actor, since it’s a high risk.”

Pride in overcoming financial setbacks

Despite the initial refusal from banks, Sumona managed to secure a loan and purchase her first home at the age of 26. She expressed immense pride in paying off her home loan, describing it as her biggest achievement. Reflecting on the financial setbacks and challenges she faced, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, Sumona said, “When I was able to pay off that home loan, by far that has been my biggest achievement. You have financial setbacks, life throws massive curveballs, and I have been dodging many such ones.”

Empowering women through financial independence

Sumona emphasized the importance of financial independence and having a stable home, particularly for women. She advised young women to prioritize having their own roof over their heads. Sumona shared, “I always say to girls in our country that having a roof of your own is very important. I often get asked when I am settling down in life, that is what I think is called being settled where you can fulfill the criteria of roti, kapda, makaan. Rest all will come and go.”

Venturing into new territories with Khatron Ke Khiladi 14

In addition to discussing her personal struggles, Sumona also talked about her decision to participate in the stunt-based reality show “Khatron Ke Khiladi 14.” Known for her work in comedy and daily soaps, Sumona felt ready to take on a new challenge. She explained, “I simply felt geared up to be a part of a reality show based on stunts for the first time ever.” This move marks a significant shift in her career, showcasing her versatility and willingness to step out of her comfort zone.
