Screenwriter Sumit Arora is a household name in the Indian film industry. The wordsmith behind acclaimed blockbusters like Jawan and Stree is currently winning plaudits for penning filmmaker Kabir Khan’s biographical sports drama Chandu Champion. The inspiring and heartwarming movie, which stars Kartik Aryan in the role of Murlikant Petkar, India’s first Paralympic gold medalist, narrates the multiple hardships Petkar went through to become a star athlete despite being disabled after sustaining bullet wounds in the 1965 Indo-Pakistan war.
Chandu Champion writer Sumit Arora reveals it took “12 drafts, multiple lockdowns” to bring Kartik Aaryan starrer to life: “In every draft, the story just kept getting richer”
According to Sumit, who had previously collaborated with Kabir Khan on 83, it took as many as 12 drafts in between multiple lockdowns to bring the extraordinary story of Chandu Champion to life.
“The process of writing Chandu Champion was really enjoyable, well for the most part, since there is no good script without its set of challenges. In this, we had the challenge of portraying a life that had no visual reference. People had no idea who Murlikant Petkar was and there was no video footage available. We began writing during the pandemic, in between the several lockdowns. I remember Kabir sharing the story with me in March, 2021. We worked on several drafts until the release of 83. And then after a pause, we began again on the next set of drafts. We must have done around 12 drafts. And in every draft, the story just kept getting richer,” Sumit shares.
An effortless weaver of stories, Sumit Arora has also written popular streaming shows like Raj & DK’s The Family Man, Netflix’s Guns & Gulaabs, and Reema Katgi and Zoya Akhtar’s Dahaad. His future projects boast an exemplary lineup including Varun Dhawan’s Baby John, Raj & DK’s Citadel and The Family Man 3.
