It’s no longer “so confusing” — Charli XCX and Lorde have finally made music together.
Charli teased the incoming remix of her song “Girl, So Confusing” via TikTok live stream with the same mural painting technique she used to announce the deluxe issue of “Brat.” Without much context, the wall simply displayed Lorde’s name, and Charli followed-up by dropping a short clip of the collaboration on her private Instagram account. The single will be released Thursday at midnight.
On the track, which is widely speculated to be about Lorde, Charli conveys her complicated feelings about a fellow female singer, singing: “People say we’re alike/ They say we’ve got the same hair/ We talk about making music/ But I don’t know if it’s honest.”
Lorde responds singing, “Well honestly I was speechless when I woke up to your voice note / You told me how you’ve been feeling / Let’s work it out on the remix.”
Coming up in the industry at the same time, Charli and Lorde (pictured above at the 2014 MTV VMAs) have long been compared and have even been mistaken for each other in interviews. Lorde tried to squash the rumors on the day “Brat” released by praising the album on her Instagram story.
“The only album I’ve ever presaved is out today,” Lorde wrote. “Charli just cooked this one different… So much grit, grace and skin in the game. I speak for all of us when I say it’s an honor to be moved, changed and gagged by her work. There is NO ONE like this bitch.”
Charli also discussed “Girl, So Confusing” on Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang’s “La Culturistas” podcast, teasing that she may soon reveal who it’s about. “I haven’t quite decided whether I’m revealing,” she said. “When I wrote it, I was like, ‘I’m revealing!’ But now, you know, the time is here; I’m like, ‘Mmmmrrmm.’ Do you think I should reveal?… People are gonna guess. You probably have an accurate guess, and I’m not gonna say out loud ’cause you’ll tell by my face, but it’s probably going to be that person.”
