Deven Bhojani recalls Aamir Khan working backstage
Bhojani revealed on Laksh Maheshwari’s podcast that he and Aamir Khan were once part of the same Gujarati play directed by Mahindra Joshi. While Bhojani acted, Aamir was relegated to backstage duties. He recalled, “We were part of a Gujarati play directed by Mahindra Joshi, who wouldn’t give Aamir a role and kept him backstage. After a few shows, we had to tour Gujarat.”
Bhojani further added, “I was pursuing my CA articleship then and couldn’t get leave from my boss. Unable to join the tour, Aamir replaced me in the play. This small role was Aamir’s first time acting on stage.”

Bhojani also shared a touching moment from Aamir Khan’s daughter Ira’s wedding. He recalled, “Aamir is very sweet. At Ira’s wedding, he introduced me saying, ‘I am here because of this guy.'” This gesture highlights the lasting impact of their early collaboration.

Aamir Khan’s path to stardom could have been smoother sailing. He spoke about his early career on The Great Indian Kapil Show, revealing that he initially struggled to land roles in college plays. Undeterred, he pursued theatre opportunities and eventually landed a small part in a Gujarati play. While his dedication led to months of rehearsal, unforeseen circumstances prevented him from performing.
Dejected, Aamir almost gave up, but fate intervened. Two filmmakers offered him work, which ultimately led Ketan Mehta to cast him in the film Holi. This role caught the attention of prominent figures in the industry, paving the way for Aamir’s lead role in the blockbuster Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988).
