Netflix will drop acclaimed filmmaker Azazel Jacobs’ masterful “His Three Daughters,” a captivating family drama featuring the stellar talents of Natasha Lyonne, Carrie Coon and Elizabeth Olsen, in the fall movie calendar. Centering on three estranged sisters reuniting to care for their ailing father, the film will open in select theaters on Sept. 6 before hitting Netflix globally on Sept. 20, revealed to Variety exclusively, in addition to a new image shown above.
Also starring Jovan Adepo, Jay O. Sanders, Rudy Galvan, Jose Febus and Jasmine Bracey, Netflix acquired the worldwide rights for a reported $7 million following its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.
Jacobs, renowned for his confident direction in indie hits like “The Lovers” (2017) with Debra Winger and “French Exit” (2020) with Michelle Pfeiffer, wrote, directed and edited this film. Variety’s chief film critic, Owen Gleiberman, praised Jacobs as “a filmmaker of effortless and moving assurance,” even comparing the film to a fast-talking version of Ingmar Bergman’s “Cries and Whispers” (1973).
Strategically, the release of “His Three Daughters” is brilliantly timed. It premieres just after the conclusion of the Telluride Film Festival and a week before Toronto, providing perfect counterprogramming for cinephiles. It opens on the same day as the much-awaited comedic supernatural sequel “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” offering a poignant alternative for moviegoers.
“His Three Daughters” is set to be one of Netflix’s major contenders for the upcoming awards season. It joins the roster of other high-profile acquisitions like Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez,” secured at Cannes, and the highly anticipated adaptation of August Wilson’s “The Piano Lesson” from debut director Malcolm Washington. Netflix has consistently received at least one best picture nomination every year since 2018, with titles such as “Roma,” “The Irishman,” “Marriage Story,” “Mank,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” “Don’t Look Up,” “The Power of the Dog,” “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “Maestro.” Additionally, Netflix has had at least one best actress nominee in the lineup during this period. Depending on which of the three powerhouse performers are campaigned, we could see Coon, Lyonne and Olsen recognized in either lead or supporting categories.
Produced by High Frequency Entertainment, Arts & Sciences, Tango, Animal Pictures, Talkies Inc. and Case Study Films, the film boasts an impressive production team. Jacobs is joined by producers Alex Orlovsky, Duncan Montgomery, Lia Buman, Marc Marrie, Mal Ward, Matt Aselton, Tim Headington, Jack Selby and Diaz Jacobs. Olsen, Coon and Lyonne also serve as executive producers alongside Danielle Renfrew Behrens, Maya Rudolph, Peter Friedland, Neil Shah and Sophia Lin.
