Sharmin Segal has recently addressed the widespread criticism she faced for her performance in the Netflix series Heeramandi, particularly focusing on a rejection scene with Taha Shah Badussha. Despite the show’s release over a month ago, discussions around her portrayal of Alamzeb continue to circulate, with many viewers questioning her emotional response in a pivotal scene.
Sharmin Segal reflects on rejection scene in Heeramandi: “Humans react differently to different situations”
Segal’s interpretation of the scene
In an interview with India Today, Segal offered her perspective on the controversial scene. “Oh, is it because I smile in that scene?” she pondered, explaining that her character, Alamzeb, was laughing at herself for the absurdity of her situation. She described the moment as a reflection of dark humour, where her character finds herself in a sad, almost ironic predicament after running away from home only to face rejection.
The nuances of her performance
Segal emphasized that her character’s eyes were teary, indicating her sadness despite the smile. She suggested that watching the series on smaller screens might lead viewers to miss these subtle emotional cues. According to her, the smile represented Alamzeb’s acknowledgment of her misfortune, rather than a reaction to the rejection itself. “Humans react differently to different situations,” she noted, highlighting that people often smile in awkward or painful moments as a coping mechanism.
Creative choices and audience interpretation
Addressing the broader creative process, Segal remarked that her choice was a collective decision made with the director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali. She acknowledged the audience’s right to their interpretations while defending her artistic decisions. “A creative person’s job is to create, and an audience will interpret it the way they feel,” she stated. Segal remains open to feedback, viewing it as constructive criticism that can help improve her future work.
Looking forward
Concluding her thoughts, Segal expressed her hope that she wouldn’t need to justify her creative choices but recognized the value in doing so for the sake of growth and understanding. “I hope that I wouldn’t have had to justify, but maybe that’s where constructive criticism will come from and make me better my work in the future,” she said. Heeramandi, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, was released on Netflix on May 1, 2024.
