The Bendahari receives RM60,000 for Praya Lane cultural preservation project – MASHAHER

MELAKA: The Bendahari, a local organisation dedicated to preserving Melaka’s cultural heritage, has received a donation of RM60,000 to help in its preservation efforts of Melaka’s Praya Lane rich heritage.

Through its ‘Stories from Praya Lane’ project, The Bendahari hopes to preserve the stories and culture of Praya Lane, a mixed neighbourhood that was predominantly a Portuguese community.

The Bendahari will also be able to initiate a repository of oral stories from past and current residents for a memory bank that will highlight and provide depth to the cultural vibrancy of Praya Lane’s past through the contribution.

“It will also facilitate inter-generational and intercultural learning between volunteers comprising adults of different ethnic backgrounds and age groups, as well as a younger generation of students from various higher educational institutions,” said Datuk Omar Siddiq on Thursday (June 20).

An exhibition in collaboration with The Melaka Portuguese Eurasian Heritage Arts and Cultural Society of Melaka and the University of Nottingham Malaysia will also be held from Sept 10 to Sept 16 at The Bendahari along Jalan Bendahara and Praya Lane in Bandar Hilir, Melaka.

HSBC Malaysia Chief Executive Officer Datuk Omar Siddiq, said his bank’s partnership with The Bendahari underlines the bank’s commitment to cultural preservation and the importance of maintaining and sharing Malaysia’s historical legacy.

“As HSBC Malaysia celebrates its 140th anniversary this year, we continue to recognise our responsibility to support the preservation of cultural heritage in the country,” he said

Omar said the contribution to The Bendahari embodies HSBC’s commitment to ensuring future generations can gain insights into the roots, identity, and rich heritage of Malaysia.
