PUNE: NCP MLA Dilip Mohite Patil’s nephew Mayur Mohite has been arrested near Pune for ramming his SUV into a two-wheeler, killing the biker, on Saturday. Pune Rural police said the victim, Om Bhalerao, was on his way home to Kalamb from a salon in Eklahare and the road where the accident took place is a narrow stretch.
Manchar police station in-charge inspector Arun Phuge said there was a turn on the road near the accident spot.“A car driver who witnessed the accident told us that the SUV was trailing a pick-up van. Just before the turn, the SUV picked up speed and moved to the other side of the road to overtake the van and hit the motorcycle. He also told us that the SUV driver did not get down from his vehicle to help the victim. Some youths from the village reached the spot and took Om to a hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.”
Om is survived by his parents and sister. His mother is a former deputy sarpanch of Kalamb village. He was a farmer and had rented out a tractor to other tillers. He also operated an eatery on the Pune-Nashik highway, his relative Nitin Bhalerao told TOI.
Pune Rural SP Pankaj Deshmukh said the SUV was on the wrong side of the road and its driver was responsible for the accident. He added, “A medical test of the SUV driver has been conducted. We have got two blood samples for alcohol tests. The entire process has been videographed. We are waiting for the test reports to ascertain whether he was driving in an inebriated condition.”
When contacted, Dilip Mohite Patil told TOI that Mayur was his deceased brother’s son. He said he spoke to his nephew immediately after the accident and told him to go to the police station. “My nephew called for an ambulance and reached the police station within 10 minutes. His medical test was done. He was not drunk at the time of the accident. We will accept the outcome of the police investigation and not interfere with the probe,” he added.
