A dramatic 24 hours behind the scenes at Port Adelaide has seen the club “divided” after board member Warren Tredrea made controversial comments on radio.
With the Power reeling from a brutal loss to Brisbane, and coach Ken Hinkley under renewed pressure for his future having been booed off Adelaide Oval, club great Tredrea took a guest role on Adelaide radio station FIVEaa.
But it was his positive response to a furious fan’s rant, which claimed Hinkley is a “con artist” and “delusional”, that has seen tempers flare at Alberton.

The fan declared the club was going to “suffer financially if nothing is done”, claiming the Power were more worried about chairman David Koch’s “pride being damaged” than the footy team by keeping Hinkley on board.
He then called for Hinkley to go, and for assistant coach Josh Carr – long viewed as the coach-in-waiting, though that is now in question as well – to take the reins for the rest of the year as an audition.
Tredrea, who was appointed to the Power board earlier this year, said in response to the fan’s rant: “Good call.”
The Power premiership captain also disputed footy boss Chris Davies admitting the list was “maybe not good enough” in a radio interview last week.
“I’m not sure I agree with that. Was I surprised at those comments? Probably a little,” Tredrea said.
The combination of the two incidents triggered a furious phone call from Power CEO Matthew Richardson to the radio station and a reversal from Tredrea, according to veteran journalist Caroline Wilson.
“Port Adelaide tonight sits as a club divided. Warren Tredrea has only made matters much worse with his comments on FIVEaa – it beggars belief he didn’t defend the coach against a rant from a supporter on air,” she said on Nine’s Footy Classified.
“That’s caused serious issues, the comments provoked a call to FIVEaa from the club CEO Matthew Richardson.
“Tredrea then attempted to explain his comments but behind the scenes, Ken Hinkley’s supporters are seething and just wondering why Tredrea has chosen this week of all weeks to make these comments, and to show the club that they’re not united.”
Port Adelaide champion Kane Cornes pointed out Tredrea has a “close relationship” with both list manager Jason Cripps and assistant coach Carr.
“It’s amazing, really, and it goes just how hard it is to be involved in the footy club and in the media at the same time,” Cornes said.
“To agree with a caller that’s called him a con artist and delusional, I’m not sure how he’s gone to air with that.
“What Chris Davies was saying was maybe we aren’t good enough, and on evidence they’re not, so I’m not sure that is offensive to anyone.”
Wilson also reported Carr “is no certainty to take over as coach” despite a previous handshake agreement for a succession plan.
Carr, the midfield coach, has overseen a clear decline in that area through 2024.
