Priyal Gor, currently starring alongside Junaid Khan (son of Aamir Khan) in Netflix’s controversial film Maharaj, recently spoke exclusively with the Free Press Journal about the movie and the surrounding controversy.

Maharaj Actor BREAKS SILENCE On Controversy
When discussing the ongoing debate, Priyal acknowledged the inherent buzz generated by films based on true stories. “Whenever a film based on a real story is released, it generates a lot of buzz. While I believe it’s essential to be aware that not everything should be trusted blindly,” she stated, “I always try to focus on the positive aspects. Any publicity, whether positive or negative, is still publicity.”
While expressing empathy for the production team’s challenges, Priyal recognized the immense effort poured into filmmaking. “It’s unfortunate for the team,” she said. “Making a movie requires a tremendous amount of effort from both actors and crew members.” She further added, “Although the controversy is sad, it has generated significant publicity. As actors and crew members get busy, a lot goes behind the scenes to make a movie happen.”
The Maharaj Controversy
The fate of Maharaj, which marks Junaid Khan’s debut, remained uncertain. The Vaishnavite sect Pustimargi alleged the film misrepresents their religious beliefs. A Gujarat High Court injunction temporarily halted the film’s June 14 release based on these concerns. However, the film got a clean chit and finally arrived on Netflix on June 21.
Directed by Siddarth P Malhotra and produced by Aditya Chopra under Yash Raj Films, Maharaj explores the 1862 Maharaj libel case, a landmark event in Indian legal history.
