Storms in southern Utah spread north through midweek – MASHAHER

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – Happy Tuesday, Utah! It’s another day of excessively hot temperatures for northern Utah with heat warnings in place through 11 p.m. this evening. While northern Utah will stay hot and dry, southern Utah can expect showers and thunderstorms.

Daytime highs will soar into the upper 90’s for many cities along the Wasatch Front and triple-digit heat for Salt Lake City. High heat and moisture hangs on for the southern half of the state with isolated showers and thunderstorms expected.

Flash flood potential remains ‘Possible’ to ‘Probable’ for our national parks and low-lying recreation areas in south-central and southeastern Utah. Heavy rains will likely lead to flash flooding in slot canyons, normal dry washes, and near-recent burn scars.

Stick to higher ground or be sure to know how to get to higher ground if recreating in these areas over the next few days. Thunderstorms capable of producing flash flooding will likely remain in the forecast through midweek.

Tonight, moisture spreading northward into the entire state will bring a chance of nocturnal storms to Utah. On Wednesday, a trough will pass by to the north increasing chances of thunderstorms over northern Utah. Expect isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms by afternoon and evening, with potential for heavy rain, small hail, and gusty winds.

By Thursday, the high-pressure ridge will begin moving east with lingering moisture in place across the state. This scenario, coupled with a passing low-pressure trough to the north, will generate the possibility of strong thunderstorms for the state in the afternoon. Flash flooding will remain a concern, especially in flood-prone areas.

Drier and cooler air will move in late Thursday, with Friday’s highs near normal. A high-pressure ridge building in for the weekend will help temperatures rebound quickly. Temperatures will likely climb 5-10 degrees above normal Saturday and Sunday with gusty winds expected. The elevated winds will be ahead of another weak front moving into the area on Monday, dropping temperatures but bringing little, if any, moisture.

The 4Warn Weather Team will continue to monitor conditions and keep you posted on changing conditions both on our 4Warn Weather app as well as on-air and online, we are Good4Utah!
