After weeks and weeks of dry runs when films were succeeding primarily on the basis of word of mouth instead of taking a Friday opening, something that’s so much required for the core fabric of box office to operate, the wait has been over with Kalki 2898 AD bringing on audiences. Of course, the start of the Hindi version is nowhere close to being bumper or blockbuster, something that had happened last year with Pathaan, Gadar 2, Jawan and Animal. However, in the times when even double-digit opening days are not coming, this one has at least started around the same levels as the biggest opener of 2024 prior to this, Fighter (Rs. 24.60 crores).
What works in favour of the film is the fact that this one has a huge release in Telugu as well as Hindi with other dubbed versions (Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam) contributing as well. As a result, the first day collections across all languages is really huge and that’s heartening not just for the Hindi exhibition circle but regional too, especially down south.
The film’s opening of Rs. 22.50 crores in the Hindi version is the second best of the year so far (after Fighter which had collected 24.60 crores) and what makes it further special is that it has come on a non-holiday. Of course, there is no comparison with Prabhas’s own Adipurush which had taken a far bigger part and yet again on a non-holiday with Rs. 36 crores coming in. However, considering the fact that theatrical business is in a rebuilding phase this year, a start like this is certainly welcome. The need of the hour from here is stability as that would be required to take this expensive film through at the box office.
