Casualty Ward, injuries, Tom Trbojevic to return in centres, State of Origin injury news, ins and outs, J’Maine Hopgood, Xavier Coates hamstring, injury, Origin III, decider – MASHAHER
Melbourne Storm winger Xavier Coates has left the field with a hamstring injury in Round 17, leaving Queensland coach Billy Slater with plenty of concern ahead of Origin Game III.
Coates injured himself attempting to score a try that was eventually disallowed, with Fox League’s Michael Ennis revealing the winger told his teammate he’d injured his hamstring.
“Concerns here for the Melbourne Storm and also for Queensland,” Ennis said.

“He looked straight at Jahrome Hughes and said hammy. He looked concerned.”
Commentator Dan Ginnane agreed Coates’ injury “is going to have some implications.”
“That’s a dejected and forlorn Melbourne injury,” he said.
The winger walked off the field fine but cameras later showed he was unable to head down the tunnel on his own, with Storm medical staff assisting him.
It’s Coates second hamstring injury of the season and raises real concerns ahead of the Origin series decider at Suncorp Stadium.
“All of a sudden Selwyn Cobbo comes right back into those calculations,” Ennis said.
Fox League’s Jake Duke also revealed it’s the same hamstring that kept him sidelined for two games earlier this season.
He also explained that he’d also suffered the injury in pre-season, meaning he’s highly unlikely to be fit for Origin Game III.
MANLY CONFIRM TURBO POSITIONAL SWITCH ON RETURN
The Manly Sea Eagles have confirmed Tom Trbojevic will return from a hamstring injury in the team’s Round 18 game against the Cowboys — but not at fullback.
In a statement on Saturday afternoon, Manly said Trbojevic has completed his reconditioning work from a hamstring injury and will be named at centre by coach Anthony Seibold next Tuesday.
Trbojevic has not played since suffering the injury against the Dolphins in round 10.
Seibold had previously suggested Trbojevic could return in the centres, telling reporters in May that Manly had to consider what was in the 27-year-old’s best interests for the long-term.
“Turbo and myself have had conversations around what we can do to help him,” Seibold said.
“We’ll see how Tolu goes at fullback over coming weeks and see how Turbo’s feeling about his body.
“His best position has always been fullback.
“But he’s done a really good job at Origin level as a centre and I think he could play as a No.6 at some stage in his career as well.”
It comes as young gun Lehi Hopoate continues to impress in the fullback jumper, with Seibold describing the 19-year-old as a “really special” player at the time.
“He did the pre-season with us and he did such a good job we took him out to Vegas just for the experience,” Seibold said.
“You see a lot of young outside backs coming into the game at the moment, full of speed and energy and that high-tempo type play.”
BRONCOS’ BACKROW BLOW
Broncos mid-season recruit Jack Gosiewski has left the field only four minutes into his side’s clash with the Warriors after reeling out of a tackle on Dallin Watene-Zelezniak.
Returning the ball, the flyer charged straight at Gosiewski whi immediately looked down at his arm before joining the defensive line.
A handful of tackles passed before the Brisbane forward was helped off the field by Broncos medicos, with commentator Warren Smith saying “he might have a broken arm”.
Gosiewski joined the Broncos from the Cowboys, filling in for the suspended Jordan Riki in his first start for his new club in Round 17.
It was later confirmed the back rower had suffered a suspected broken arm.
WAYNE, BILLY RECEIVE HAMMER BOOST
Elsewhere, Queensland and the Dolphins were dealt a horror scare blow in the first half of Game II, with Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow leaving the field due to a shoulder injury.
Maroons coach Billy Slater confirmed the young centre picked up an AC joint injury, with Tabuai-Fidow sent for scans following Game II.
Initially the worst was feared for Tabuai-Fidow, with the Dolphins sweating on their star man’s scan results.
However, those results have come back relatively positive for Wayne Bennett’s side, with their flying fullback confirmed to have suffered a grade-one AC joint injury during Origin II.
Tabuai-Fidow will miss his side’s Round 17 match with the Dolphins and if the club didn’t have the bye in Round 18 the fullback would’ve suited up next week.
The news is positive for the Dolphins as well as the Maroons, with Billy Slater now able to call on his star centre for a crucial decider up in Suncorp.
In a club statement, Dolphins Head of Performance Jeremy Hinkmans said “the injury lloked pretty good at the moment and should not cause him any trouble in his next game, most likely for Queensland.”
HOPGOOD OUT FOR THE SEASON
The Parramatta Eels have confirmed Queensland representative J’Maine Hopgood will miss the remainder of the season with a back injury he picked up during the Maroons Game I victory.
“After meeting with specialists regarding a lower back injury, it has been decided J’Maine will undergo a microdisectomy,” an Eels statement explained.
The club confirmed the lock would miss up to 12 weeks, effectively ruling him out for the rest of the season given the Eels sit last with little chance of qualifying for the finals.
SJ HITS BACK AT CRITICS
Injured Warriors star Shaun Johnson has hit back at social media critics in the wake of his injury diagnosis.
The halfback is set to miss the next four weeks with an Achilles injury he re-aggravated during the horror loss to the Titans.
“He’s going to be out for at least four weeks. It’s all around the Achilles,” Warriors coach Andrew Webster said via the NZ Herald.
Johnson, last year’s Dally M Medal runner-up, has struggled to recapture his best form this season with injuries certainly playing their part.
Johnson has played in 12 of 15 games in 2024, but wasn’t 100% in several of those, with the halfback choosing to play through the pain.
It hasn’t worked out so far, with Johnson only playing well in patches this year. In fact, the Warriors have won all three games that the veteran has missed this season.
Unfortunately, this has caused Johnson to receive some negative comments on social media, which the halfback brought to light in a post on Instagram (see below).
“Just like you I see the comments and damn some of you are savage ha,” Johnson wrote on Instagram.
Chanel Harris-Tavita and Te Maire Martin will start in the halves against the Broncos this weekend.

LUCKLESS TITAN SET FOR ANOTHER SIDELINE STINT
Jayden Campbell’s poor luck with injury this season has continued, with the Titans livewire set for another sideline stint.
Campbell suffered a hand fracture in the record-breaking win over the Warriors. He is expected to miss just one game (Round 18) and return to face the Eels the week after. Gold Coast have the bye in Round 17.
Remarkably, the Titans revealed in a press release that Campbell picked up the injury early in the match, showing plenty of guts and bravery to not only play through but star in the win.
Playing in the halves for just the third time in his NRL career, Campbell broke the club’s all-time points record in the win, scoring 26 points (11 goals, 1 try).
It’s the third sideline stint for Campbell this season, who has played in just six games in 2024.
He missed the first three games of this season because of a dislocated patella he suffered in 2023.
The 24-year-old then sustained a knee (PCL) injury against the Raiders in Round 6 and missed two months of football.
Campbell was playing in his third game back from that PCL injury when he picked up a fresh hand issue.
