South Africa added another entry into their long history of chokes to hand India the World Cup title in a tense final in Bridgetown.
India captain Rohit Sharma fell to the turf and lay face down as his team-mates cavorted around the Kensington Oval celebrating a seven run win that brought their first World Cup title in any format since 2011.
A terrific final was won by one of the great catches off the first ball of the last over when South Africa needed 16 to win. Suryakumar Yadav on the boundary clung on to a big hit from South Africa’s last specialist batsman, David Miller. He ran from wide long off, tossed the ball in the air as his momentum took him over the rope, and calmly caught the rebound.
It was a gut punch for South Africa. With 16 now needed off five they just ran out of puff as Hardik Pandya bowled out the final over and seconds after the winning moment, rain fell matching South Africa’s tears – Miller crying on a team-mates shoulder after the match.
At 151 for four chasing 177 to win, South Africa were cruising. Miller and Heinrich Klaasen had smashed India’s spinners, who conceded 106 off nine overs, and the target was down to 26 off 23. But Klaasen nicked a wide ball from Pandya and South Africa collapsed, losing three for 17 and in the end India were carried home by their superstars: Virat Kohli with 76 to rescue an early collapse and Jasprit Bumrah with two for 18 off four overs.
Swathes of India fans made it to the Kensington Oval, many booking their trips from the United States and Britain months in advance in anticipation of their team making it this far.
It was never really in doubt. They had a 100 percent record at the World Cup, and only Pakistan came close to beating them over the course of the month.
Yes they had every advantage as if they were the hosts not West Indies with consistent morning start times and clearly defined venues all the way through, but a team as good as this does not need help from administrators bending the knee to India’s broadcast might.
Bumrah needed three balls to send down one of the best deliveries seen in a final. Reeza Hendricks was the victim. The ball angled in, swung away late and hit off stump.
Tristan Stubbs and Quinton De Kock started the rebuild and South Africa were in front at the halfway stage, 81-3 compared to India’s 75 for three. In T20 an asking rate of 96 off the last ten overs with wickets in hand is very gettable.
But this was a final. South Africa had never been in this position before and we know their problem with the C-word – choke. The brute force of Klaasen seemed to be taking them home. He slotted Ravi Jadeja for a straight six and lifted Kuldeep Yadav over the cover boundary with the best shot of the day and dispatched Axar Patel’s final over for 24 – including two sixes and a four that unnerved the bowler so much he sent down two wides trying desperately to keep the ball out of his arc.
Now it was a run a ball – 30 off 30. Now this was choke territory. Klaasen survived Bumrah’s third over but feathered a cut behind off the first ball of the match from Pandya Eight came off the next two overs as the wobble set in.
Bumrah bowled a pivotal 18th over with 22 needed off 18 balls. South Africa could not afford to lose wickets considering the length of their tail. The fourth ball, straight and fast, ripped through Marco Jansen’s defence hitting off stump.
Keshav Maharaj took a single off Bumrah’s final ball, a bad piece of game management because with two overs left they needed Miller on strike. It took him three balls to get down the right end. When he did he could only eke out a single, leaving 16 off the final over that was just too much.
Kohli’s slowest T20 fifty for India glued the innings but chewed up balls. He was gifted three juicy half volley fours to race to 15 off five but hit just one more boundary in his next 35 balls as he reached a half century. A late flurry, which included his only six, gave him 26 off 11.
Patel made a crucial 47 outscoring Kohli as he took the initiative in a stand of 72. A dozy run out when he hesitated and De Kock hit the stumps at the non-striker’s end was sloppy and South Africa should have kept the target below 170 but Marco Jansen’s nervy last over went for 17 and it proved costly.

Very hard to sum up what we’ve been through for the last few years. We worked hard. A lot has gone on behind the scenes. It’s not what we did today, its what we’ve done in the last few years.
We’ve played a lot of high pressure games and we’ve been on the wrong side of it so the guys so understand what needs to be done.
We stuck together as a team even thought at one point it looked like it was going South Africa’s way and we wanted this really bad.
We wanted to win this, to win a tournament like this, I’m very proud of the boys we have and the management as well.

Kohli gets the first ball of Maharaj’s second over away and it looks like it is going for four at wide long-off but a brilliant diving stop from Miller prevents the boundary.
A few balls later Kohli will not be denied as he powers a punch off the back foot in a similar area for four.

Suryakumar Yadav is the new batsman. Jansen lasted just one over and after it was expensive, Markram has turned to Kagiso Rabada. Just one run comes from the first five balls and Suryakumar tries to dispatch Rabada over mid-on. He does not time it well though and only just gets enough on it to get it over. There is a small amount of concern for South Africa here as Nortje has gone off to receive some medical attention.
Incredible how in the space of only two overs a match can swing completely from one side to the other. Jos Buttler will sympathise with Rishabh Pant, toe-ending a spinner.

Rishabh Pant joins Kohli in the middle but he only last two balls. He goes for a sweep but ends up looping a catch to de Kock behind the stumps. They check for a bump ball but that clearly looped up off the toe of the bat. He is gone and what a significant over that could be in this final. FOW 23/2

Sharma gets India going first ball with a single to mid-on. A bit of shape for Jansen, who has a leg-slip in place.
Kohli, who has had a tough run during this tournament, just leans on his first ball outside his off stump and drives through point for the first boundary of this final. Jansen then strays too straight and Kohli flicks with ease past square-leg for four more.
More runs flowing for India as Kohli leans again on a drive, this time through cover, for a couple.
Off the final ball Kohli drives past Jansen for four to end a great first over for India, 15 runs from it.
Very nervous start to this final from South Africa. Jansen serves up three half volleys in the first over to settle Kohli who was under pressure after a poor run.

A bit of exclusive news from these shores
Big news in English cricket this morning was broken by Will Macpherson. Jamie Smith to keep wicket in the Test side surely signalling the end for Jonny Bairstow and Ben Foakes. It follows on form England ending James Anderson’s career. Bairstow has not been the same since his injury and Foakes is not good enough with the bat. Brutal, but changes had to happen with the road to the next Ashes starting at Lord’s next week. Smith will face a lot of scrutiny of his keeping. That will be the mental test for him. I spoke to him a couple of months ago and he was confident he could handle it if called up. Now we will find out.

We have probably not been at our best at times in this tournament but we have found ways to win, so we take a lot of confidence and belief.
We are striving for that perfect game today. Perfect is not really attainable but if we can get close to it we will be in with a good shout.
My message to the boys is to take it all in. There is absolutely no pressure for us. We have never been in a final but this is the opportunity we have always wanted.
Hopefully we can put India under pressure early on.

Will South Africa get over the line?
While it is true to say that South Africa have lost all seven of their semi-finals in World Cups, they did win the Champions Trophy in 1998. And, more relevantly, two of their current players won the Under-19 World Cup in 2014. Kagiso Rabada opened their bowling, very tightly, then Aiden Markram opened their batting and with his 66* helped to knock off the modest target set by Pakistan with six wickets to spare. Match preview
Barbados is the stage for the 2024 T20 World Cup final as Rohit Sharma’s India take on Aiden Markram’s South Africa for the crown. Both sides have remained unbeaten throughout the tournament but only one can win the trophy.
India defeated the defending champions England by 68 runs in Guyana in the semi-finals whilst South Africa destroyed Afghanistan by nine wickets in Trinidad.
Despite the global success of the IPL, India have not won a world title in 13 years since the 2011 50-over World Cup. They are seeking redemption for their defeat in the 50-over final last year when they lost the final on home soil against Australia.
South Africa have ended their semi-final hoodoo, having lost on their previous seven occasions at this stage of the 50-over and T20 World Cups. They have never won an a T20 or 50-over World Cup and will be hoping that today is the day that what will end.
Ahead of the biggest game in South Africa’s cricket history, their captain Aiden Markram has been speaking about the support from former players as they look to win their first world title.
“We haven’t achieved what we would like to on the world stage,” Markram said. “That is what gets the juices going for the boys to try to achieve it. You have seen it in the close results. The will to win drives you to, by hook or by crook, get the job done.”
“There has been a lot of support from back home from past players, which is special for us. They are the guys that inspired us when we were younger. To be making them proud and having their support means a hell of a lot to us as a team.”
Although it is very unlikely, it is possible that India and South Africa could be joint-winners should the final, which does have a reserve day, be washed out. With that being very unlikely, who will come out victorious? India or South Africa?
