About the Spirit of Service Award
The Spirit of Service Award is presented by the Partnership for Public Service during the Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals award ceremony. This year’s event is set to take place on September 11 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. While the award typically honours career federal employees, it also recognizes individuals outside the government who contribute significantly to public service and democracy.
A Starting Point: Fostering civic engagement
A Starting Point, co-founded by Evans, Kassen, and Kiani in 2020, is a video-based civic engagement platform aimed at creating a more informed electorate. The platform seeks to facilitate communication between Americans and their elected officials, with a particular focus on high school and college-age youth. Recent content on their Instagram account includes updates on FEMA’s response to extreme heat and debates on key political issues.
Max Stier on A Starting Point’s impact
Max Stier, president and CEO of the Partnership for Public Service highlighted the importance of connecting with young people to build a civically engaged society. “By connecting with young people, A Starting Point helps build a more civically engaged society, an effective government that looks like the people it serves, and, ultimately, a stronger democracy,” Stier said.
Evans, Kassen, and Kiani’s joint statement
In a joint statement, Evans, Kassen, and Kiani expressed their gratitude for the recognition. They praised their team at A Starting Point and emphasized their mission to encourage civic engagement. “We created ASP to encourage civic engagement and make it accessible for everyone, so we are truly humbled for ASP to receive this recognition alongside so many incredible federal employees who share the same goal within the government,” they said.
Chris Evans on civic engagement
In a previous interview, Evans discussed his motivation for creating A Starting Point. “There’s a lot of things you can do as an actor with your name,” he said. “I could be making booze — I don’t discourage anyone from doing that, I love booze — but there’s no denying that I played a certain character [as Captain America], and it just so happens to align with part of my nature in terms of being someone who is politically involved and who cares about the well-being of people in this country.”
