Actress Juhi Chawla, a prominent figure in the Indian film industry, recently opened up about her decision to forgo a grand wedding with businessman Jay Mehta. Despite being at the peak of her career in the ’90s and having 2000 wedding invitations sent out, Juhi felt overwhelmed by the idea of a lavish ceremony. The actress, who has been married to Jay for 29 years, shared this heartfelt story at the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

Juhi revealed that the thought of losing her career and dealing with the recent death of her mother added to her distress as her wedding date approached. “I was shooting for some of the really big films of my career, and I was supposed to get married. My mother had just passed a year ago. When the marriage date was coming close, I was thinking my mother is gone, whom I loved the most, and now my career will also go away. I didn’t know how to be happy about it. So, I broke down one day and I told my mother-in-law and she said, ‘It’s okay,’” Juhi said.
Mother-in-Law’s remarkable gesture
In a remarkable show of support, Juhi’s mother-in-law managed to recall almost 2000 invitations and convinced the family to opt for a small, intimate wedding instead. Juhi and Jay tied the knot at home with only 80-90 close family members and friends in attendance. Juhi expressed her gratitude for her mother-in-law’s understanding and support during such a critical time, which made the transition much easier for her.
A difficult time and unwavering support
The actress also recounted the difficult period following her mother’s sudden death in 1998 while she was shooting for the movie Duplicate. Jay, who had his own share of tragedy with the loss of his first wife in a plane crash in 1990, stood by Juhi’s side and provided unwavering support. “That was a very difficult time for me because I felt I was going to lose everything I loved,” Juhi shared with CNN-News18. Jay’s constant presence and thoughtful gestures played a crucial role in helping Juhi cope with her grief.
A love story of persistence and care
Juhi reminisced about how Jay’s persistent efforts to comfort her eventually led to their deep bond. He would send flowers, notes, and gifts every day, including a truckload of red roses on her birthday. “From then on, everywhere I went, he turned up. Everywhere I looked, he was there with flowers and notes and gifts. Every day! On my birthday, I remember he sent me a truckload of red roses. I was like, ‘What do you do with a truckload of flowers?’ He really did all he could. After a year, he proposed,” Juhi recalled.
Through this candid revelation, Juhi Chawla not only shared her emotional journey but also highlighted the importance of support and understanding in navigating personal and professional challenges.
