Legendary Cristiano Ronaldo consoled his compatriot Pepe after Portugal were knocked out of the Euro 2024 after their quarter-final loss to France on Friday, 5 July. Portugal were beaten in the penalties 5-3 after the match remained 0-0 after Extra Time in Hamburg, Germany. Pepe broke into tears after the match as the 41-year-old Pepe signed off, from what surely is his final appearance in the competition.
Ronaldo, who had broken into tears after missing the penalty in the previous game, held things together as the players around him were inconsolable after the team’s exit from the tournament.

France secured a nail-biting win over Portugal via penalties, which marked a bitter-end to Cristiano Ronaldo’s Euro 2024 journey. After a stalemate throughout the game, the match again found its way to the spot-kicks and France had the last laugh. There were very few factors to separate the two sides, but Joao Felix’s penalty hitting the post sent Kylian Mbappe’s side to the semi-final against Spain on July 10.
France defender Theo Hernandez struck the winning penalty in a 5-3 shootout win against Portugal to reach the semi-finals of Euro 2024 where they will meet Spain. Joao Felix missed for Portugal during the shootout which came after the match finished 0-0 following extra time.
Both teams missed a string of chances in 120 minutes of open play at the Volksparkstadion, the best chance falling to Cristiano Ronaldo in the first period of extra time when he skied over from close range.
France’s Kylian Mbappe looked uncomfortable in a mask he was wearing for a broken nose and was substituted during extra time.
France will play Spain in Munich on Tuesday for a chance to reach the July 14 final.
