This year the Olympic Opening Ceremony in Paris is going to come with a dash of desi fashion- Bridal couturier, Tarun Tahiliani in collaboration with Tasva has designed the ceremonial outfits for Team India. We caught him in action at his studio- sketching the costumes from scratch and creating a neck piece on the spot.
When questioned about the obvious colour choice, he replied saying it’s been anything but obvious. After all, the Indian team has been spotted in every other colour from blue to golden. This year is different, he said, with a growing collective consciousness, it’s India’s time to shine wearing costumes that reflect our deep-rooted tradition. Paired with Banarsi shoes and an ikkat border, which he described as “the unifying force”- July 26 will witness 300 athletes marching down the Seine wearing this very attire. Having been in the fashion business for 30 years, he is self-admittedly anal about fittings and insisted on custom-made measurements for each athlete, but is now sweating it out before the D-day.
While he has been part of many fashion debuts in the past, this one in the fashion capital of the world, is what eyes are on now, as Team India makes their way to the world stage in 2024.
