Given the kind of genre that Kill belongs to (which is been hitherto unexplored by Bollywood), the trailer which pretty much indicated that this was one was a very niche film, and a new leading man, expectations from the opening day box office numbers of Kill were pretty much kept under check. This one was also devoid of any music per se and then an out and out violent film with blood splattering all around and bodies being slashed meant that a wide section of audiences was anyways eliminated. Hence, it’s the gentry which was expected to step in.
Well, this is what happened as after seeing a tight release at just around 1000 screens, the film saw footfalls primarily in the evening and night shows with youth patronizing it. Rs. 1.35 crore came in for the film which features a newcomer leading man [Lakshya] and that’s a number on the expected lines. The need of the hour was for the film to have a cushion of over Rs. 1 crore on the opening day so that it can build from there and this is what that happened as well.
What needs to be seen from hereon is the kind of growth that the film sees. Today, the collections will jump for sure and if that’s around 50% then the film will end up going past the Rs. 2 crores mark. Then another jump on the same lines will take it to Rs. 3 crores on Sunday and if that indeed turns out to be the case then there can be stability from Monday onwards. Kill brings with it a new grammar of storytelling in India, courtesy director Nikhil Bhat, and it would be interesting to see how audiences grab it in days and weeks to come.
