Myrtle Beach area campgrounds evacuated. Police, armored tank show up. What happened? – MASHAHER

Vacationers staying at a Myrtle Beach area campground were evacuated and an armored police vehicle was brought in after a weapons incident turned into a barricaded person.

Horry County Police posted on Facebook Sunday night about an incident at Ocean Lakes Family Campground, 6001 S. Kings Highway. Around 7:30 p.m., police said they were responding to a “possible weapons incident” and had evacuated those nearby. Around 8:30 p.m., Horry County Police said a subject had barricaded themselves inside a home.

SWAT members, drone team, negotiations, the bomb squad and the dog team arrived on site. An armored vehicle was also used during the incident.

Horry County spokesperson Mikayla Moskov said by text there is no additional information at time of publication. Moskov said that the use of the department’s armored personnel carrier “is a vital resource that enables us to safely get personnel closer to the incident and the individual/subject in question.”

The Sun News requested the incident report from Horry County Police.

Pictures and videos from the scene show an officer stationed behind a car with a gun and a large police presence. In a Facebook live video, police officers can be heard asking the person to come out over a loudspeaker or bullhorn.

Later in the video, police walk a woman wearing handcuffs away from the scene, sit her down and give her water. After a few minutes, she was put into a police truck.

It is unclear what caused the person to barricade themselves and why the large police presence was required.

Multiple people posted online about tear gas being used but that has not been confirmed by Horry County Police. People also posted about not being able to get into the campgrounds at certain locations.

Around 9:40 p.m. police said they brought the person into custody and an investigation is ongoing. Horry County has not released the name of the person brought into custody.
