The celebrations in the family of Abhishek Sharma began on Sunday evening when the 23-year-old hit his maiden T20I hundred. Abhishek Sharma’s sister Komal took to social media to share a heartwarming video of their parents celebrating the century while watching the whirlwind innings in the second T20I between India and Zimbabwe on television.

Abhishek Sharma’s sister, Komal, gave a glimpse of the emotions in the family. Komal also shared a screengrab of a video call with her brother from Sunday evening. Abhishek hit a 47-ball hundred on Sunday to help India beat Zimbabwe by 100 runs at the Harare Sports Club. It was the 23-year-old’s second international outing for India and he made merry, hitting 8 sixes and 7 boundaries.

ZIM vs IND, 2nd T20I: Highlights

Abhishek Sharma spoke to his family from the Harare Sports Club after winning the Player of the Match award in the 2nd T20I in Harare. The special moment was captured as the BCCI shared a video of Abhishek talking to his parents after the record-breaking century.

Abhishek Sharma’s sister has been a pillar of support for the young cricketer from Punjab. Komal, who is a doctor, was seen spending time with Abhishek throughout the IPL 2024 season.

Abhishek Sharma also spoke to his mentor and former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh after the century in Harare. In a video shared by the Indian cricket board, Yuvraj can be seen congratulating Abhishek while also reminding the youngster that it is only the start of a long journey at the highest level.

Abhishek Sharma got out for a duck on his T20I debut — in the first T20I on Harare on Saturday. However, the SunRisers Hyderabad star did not curb his natural instincts when he walked out to bat in the second T20I on Sunday. Abhishek began his innings with a six, got to his fifty with a six and reached his hundred with a hat-trick of sixes.

Speaking to the press after the game, Abhishek Sharma credited his father’s inputs for his big-hitting game while playing down the tag of ‘sixer king’. Notably, Abhishek had finished the IPL 2024 season as its highest six-hitter – 42 big ones.

“Special thanks to my dad who always encouraged me to play lofted shots even when I was a kid. Usually, coaches don’t allow you to play lofted shots much. My dad used to tell me ‘if you want to play a lofted shot, it should go out of the ground’,” Abhishek said.

India posted 234 on the board in 20 overs after Abhishek’s 100 and Ruturaj Gaikwad’s unbeaten 77. Rinku Singh chipped in with a quickfire 48 off just 22 balls. India rode on an all-round bowling show to clinch a 100-run win and level the five-match series 1-1.
