Hum Aapke Hain Koun! (1994) continues to hold a special place in Bollywood’s history. Directed by Sooraj Barjatya, the film’s enduring charm lies not just in its narrative but also in the behind-the-scenes anecdotes that reveal the camaraderie between the cast and crew. Starring Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit in lead roles, the film also had Alok Nath, Reema Lagoo, Anupam Kher, Mohnish Bahl and Renuka Shahane in pivotal roles. Veteran actress Himani Shivpuri, who played the endearing Dr Razia, recently shared a delightful memory from the sets of the film with Bollywood Hungama, offering a glimpse into Salman Khan’s playful personality in his early years as a rising star.
EXCLUSIVE: Himani Shivpuri recalls Salman Khan’s prankster attitude on sets of Hum Aapke Hain Koun when he lifted her in his arms: “I reacted and I gave him a slap”
Back then, Salman Khan was a fresh face on the scene, far from the megastar status he enjoys today. Himani recalls her first encounter with him, a moment that deviated from the script and showcased Salman’s knack for improvisation. During a scene, Sooraj Barjatya laid out the instructions, and filming began. But Salman, ever the spontaneous soul, surprised everyone, including Himani, by exclaiming, “Chachi jaan” (aunt) and lifting her off the ground.
This unexpected adlib elicited a natural reaction from Himani. In a playful reflex, she slapped him, leaving even Sooraj Barjatya momentarily stunned. However, he decided to retain this unscripted exchange in the final film. Little did Himani know, this was just the beginning of Salman’s playful surprises. “The first time I met Salman, I remember Sooraj Barjatya explained the scene to us and he said okay. Suddenly, while filming the scene, Salman says, ‘Chachi jaan,’ and he lifts me up. Since I had a background in theatre, I reacted and I gave him a slap and all that and even Sooraj ji was surprised but he said, ‘It’s looking nice. We will keep it.’ So the next time Salman lifted me suddenly in another scene, I was prepared” she told Bollywood Hungama.
One interesting detail Himani reveals is the strict vegetarian food policy on the sets, courtesy of Rajshri Productions. This, however, couldn’t dampen Salman’s spirit of generosity. Knowing the crew’s diverse culinary preferences, he would often bring homemade biryani, a welcome break from the vegetarian fare. “Salman was such a brat. It was wonderful working with him. He would also bring food from his home – biryani and all. On the sets of Hum Aapke Hai Koun, they only served vegetarian food. So, he would bring biryani on Eid and we all used to have it. He was also a big prankster,” she added.
Looking ahead, Salman Khan’s fans eagerly await his upcoming projects. The Eid 2025 release, Sikandar, directed by AR Murugadoss. Sharing screen space with Rashmika Mandanna, Sathyaraj, and Prateik Babbar, the film is currently in production.
