Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) is a Bollywood phenomenon. Not only did the Aditya Chopra directorial redefine on-screen romance, but it also captured the hearts of audiences with its vibrant characters. While Shah Rukh Khan’s portrayal of the quintessential loverboy Raj stole the show, Kajol’s Simran was equally captivating. Himani Shivpuri, who played Kajol’s aunt in the movie, recently shared her memories of the film’s set in an interview with Bollywood Hungama. Her anecdotes paint a picture of a young Kajol who was far from the demure damsel in distress audiences were accustomed to seeing.

Himani Shivpuri described the set as a place of camaraderie, where meals were shared, and laughter filled the air. Farida Jalal and Shivpuri shared a green room, and Kajol would waltz in sporting shorts. One particular incident that Shivpuri recounted was how Kajol, in a playful moment, would grab a plate of curd and playfully “apply it all over Aditya Chopra’s hair.” This act left Achala Sachdev, the veteran actress who played Kajol’s grandmother in the film, utterly bewildered. Sachdev couldn’t help but exclaim, “Haaye rabba” (Oh God!).
“We used to have a great time shooting for DDLJ. We had our set at Filmistan. Farida Jalal and I shared a huge green room. We all used to have meals together. The whole time was celebration time. I still remember how Kajol used to come in shorts. She was a tomboy and she used to literally jump with a plate of curd and apply it all over Aditya Chopra’s hair. And Achala Sachdev used to be like ‘Haaye rabba’, and said, ‘Haaye, humarein zamane mein toh Waheeda ji hoti Meena Kumari hoti thi, they hardly used to talk. They used to be so poised’. Kajol was really in that way a tomboy,” she said.
Shivpuri’s anecdotes go beyond a single prank. She revealed Kajol was unconcerned about maintaining a perfectly applied lipstick or conforming to a specific image. When filming Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Himani Shivpuri recalled her camaraderie with Karan Johar. “When we were doing Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Karan used to be like ‘Thank god you are a tomboy in the first half of the film’ to Kajol. Because she never used to bother if her lipstick wiped off, unlike other heroines. She used to randomly yell, ‘Bhook lagi hai, sandwich’, and just used to eat it the way she wanted. Mickey Contractor (make-up artiste) used to pull his hair. He used to be like, ‘What am I gonna do when you will become a lady.’”
Beyond Hum Aapke Hain Koun!, Himani Shivpuri has carved a niche for herself in the industry. From her television debut in Phir Wahi Talash to her roles in popular films like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, she has been part of some of the most popular movies in Hindi cinema.
