Karan Johar, a prominent figure in Bollywood, recently shed light on the anxieties he faced before the release of his directorial comeback, Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani (RARKPK). The film, starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, marked Johar’s return to directing feature films after a seven-year hiatus.

Karan Johar, known for his larger-than-life cinematic productions, has also faced criticism for his films’ portrayal of relationships and social circles. However, RARKPK garnered positive reviews, defying expectations. Despite the success, Johar admitted to experiencing immense apprehension before the release.
The filmmaker attributed his anxieties to the intense social media trolling and negativity he’d encountered in recent years. “There was a lot of nonsense during Covid,” he shared in a conversation with journalist Faye D’Souza on her YouTube channel. “People had formed an impression of me through those seven years about things that were coming out.”
He elaborated on feeling targeted during a period of widespread criticism towards Bollywood. It was a tough time during the Covid when things were happening and Bollywood was being bashed and somehow I had become the poster boy of all that,” he stated.
Karan Johar Recalls Mother Hiroo Johar’s Breakdown
KJo described the emotional toll the negativity took, not just on himself, but also on his family. “You walk in and see a news anchor screaming about you, and your mother watching it and breaking down every second day,” he recounted. He expressed a desire for empathy and understanding from the media, questioning why the focus was solely on him. “There are 18,000 other people in the industry,” he pointed out.
When Hiroo Johar Suggested Performing Havan
Johar revealed that his mother, Hiroo Johar, even suggested performing a “havan” (a fire ritual) to ward off negativity. He shared his mother’s emotional distress, stating, “She said they don’t know who her son really is…she asked, ‘why don’t they know that you’re loving and giving?'”
Karan acknowledged the potential for his talk show persona to be misconstrued as arrogant. He concluded by expressing his relief at the success of Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani, stating, “When Rocky Aur Rani was releasing, I just wanted it to become a success.”
