GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — On May 31, Governor Jared Polis signed S.B. 24-131, a bill that prohibits carrying firearms – both concealed and open – in sensitive spaces, including certain government buildings and adjacent parking lots.
This bill just went into effect July 1, but not for Mesa County.
Mesa County Commissioner Janet Rowland tells WesternSlopeNow Mesa County decided to opt out in late June, before the bill even went into effect.
Places like the Central Services building in downtown Grand Junction, the landfill and the Clerk and Recorder’s Office will continue to allow open and concealed carry.
Mesa County Commissioner Cody Davis says it was an easy decision for the board to make.
Fruita local Leeroy tells WesternSlopeNow he agrees with the county’s decision to opt out, given certain places – like the justice center and jail – still won’t allow concealed or open carry.
But others, like Dan, feel differently. He says anyone with a gun can escalate a confrontation of any kind to a deadly level.
Grand Junction Director of Communications Sara Spaulding said in a statement the City of Grand Junction plans to abide by state law effective July 1, 2024.
