AJMER: A 16-year-old rape survivor and her 54-year-old father died by suicide in Nagaur district in Rajasthan on Tuesday morning. In her suicide note, the minor said her rapist’s accomplices came to her house on Sunday night and threatened to kill her, but local police failed to take action against them and instead threatened her and her family.
Villagers found the father and daughter dead in their house, and informed police.The bodies were sent to a govt hospital for postmortem. Nagaur SP Narayan Togas suspended Khatu police station SHO Radha Kishan Meena for failing to ensure the rape survivor’s security, and handed over the investigation into the lapses in the Pocso case probe and the role of policemen, to a probationary IPS officer. The girl, who was abducted and raped on June 13, had named two persons – Motiram and Mangilal – in her police complaint, based on which a case was registered under the Pocso Act on June 14.
The girl’s cousin told TOI Motiram raped the girl before setting her free. After an FIR was registered, the SHO and the accused started threatening family to withdraw the case, he said. Motiram was subsequently arrested, but Mangilal came to his uncle’s house and threatened to kill the girl and her father. “This is the reason my cousin and uncle took the extreme step,” he added. The SP said after the FIR was filed, police had recorded the girl’s statement under CrPC section 164, and were also searching for the absconding accused named by the survivor in her complaint. However, he acknowledged there were lapses in the Pocso case probe.
