Interstate 16 traveling east and westbound is shut down due to a “large piece of equipment” striking the Chatham Parkway overpass at I-16, according to a Savannah Police Department traffic alert. The overpass is also shutdown
I-16 is shut down from Highway 307 (Dean Forest Road) to Interstate 516. East and westbound traffic should use Highway 17 and Highway 80, according to the SPD alert.
The Georgia Department of Transportation is evaluating the site to determine when traffic flow can return to both locations, according to a press release by the agency. The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the GDOT release.
GDOT did not immediately respond to an inquiry by the Savannah Morning News.
