Mazda US uses Toyota powertrain in new hybrid – MASHAHER

Mazda’s US unit has launched a new hybrid powertrain for its CX-50 using Toyota components.

Hybrid models are distinguished from other variants by subtle styling changes such as unique wheel designs, a different lower front bumper design and the availability of a new red leather interior option.

The hybrid platform has been designed around the Toyota Hybrid System (THS), a powertrain package that is comprised of a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated, four cylinder engine, hybrid EV battery, three electric motors, electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (eCVT), and standard Electric AWD (eAWD).

This is good for 219 horsepower and 163 lb ft of torque on the US’ regular 87 octane fuel. Consumption is an EPA estimated 38mpg combined, which is about 40% improved compared to the CX-50 2.5 S with Mazda’s own powertrain.

Mazda engineers calibrated details of the hybrid powertrain, such as the accelerator pedal response to match the conventional models’ driving dynamics.

Tuned drive modes, such as Power or Trail, are available and towing capacity is rated at 1,500 pounds.

Mazda does its own hybrid powertrain in European CX-60 with a longitudinally mounted 2.5-litre petrol engine; Toyota’s is mounted transversely.

Toyota also supplies a rebadged variant of its Yaris Hybrid to Mazda Europe which is sold as part of the 2 range.

“Mazda US uses Toyota powertrain in new hybrid” was originally created and published by Just Auto, a GlobalData owned brand.
