Hundreds of visitors flocked to the historic rail town of Roseville on Friday to see the world’s largest steam locomotive during its two-day visit.
Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014, normally housed in Wyoming, is making a five-state Westward Bound tour this year. The 132-foot-long vehicle weighs 1.2 million pounds.
Roseville and Ogden, Utah, were the only cities on the tour to receive two-day display stops. The train will be on display Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m at Atlantic and Vernon streets near downtown Roseville.
On Sunday the train leaves Roseville with passengers on a sold-out, one-way trip over the Sierra. It is scheduled to stop for 15 minutes in Colfax and 30 minutes in Truckee before arriving in Sparks, Nev., at 5:30 p.m. A complete schedule can be found at UP’s website. The company also has an online map tracking the train’s location in real time.
No. 4014 was one of 25 Big Boys built for Union Pacific, which restored the train to operating condition — it runs on oil now instead of the original coal — in 2019.
