Thomas Matthew Crooks has been identified as the shooter in the attempted assassination of Donald Trump.

The 20-year-old was shot and killed at the campaign rally on Saturday.

Crooks allegedly fired shots at the stage in Butler, Pennsylvania where the former US President was speaking.

As the FBI continue to determine the motivation for the attack – which left one rally attendee dead and two others critically injured – details about the suspect’s life have surfaced.

According to state voter records, he was a registered Republican.

It would have been the first time Crooks was old enough to vote in the upcoming November 5 election.

The alleged shooter lived in Bethel Park – about an hour away from where Trump was shot in the ear having narrowly avoided a shot to the head.

The airspace over Bethel Park has been closed for “special security reasons”, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

A 2021 Federal Election Commission filing states that Crooks made a $15 donation to ActBlue, a political action committee that raises money for left-wing and Democratic politicians when he was 17 years old.

After graduating from Bethel Park High School in 2022, he received a $500 “star award” from the National Math and Science Initiative, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Law enforcement officials said that Crooks had no identification on him at the site of the shooting and had to be identified using other methods.

Kevin Rojek, FBI special agent said: “We’re looking at photographs right now and we’re trying to run his DNA and get biometric confirmation.”

Police have cordoned off Crook’s home as officers guard the property.

Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have been spotted at the scene of his home along with a bomb squad.

Trump has since returned to his home in New Jersey to recover.
