What is a diverging diamond interchange?

Diverging diamond interchanges simplify how traffic flows at busy intersections with interstates. As drivers approach the interstate, the lanes switch back to the right side of the road at a traffic signal. After crossing over or under the interstate, drivers switch back to the original side at another signal.

These interchanges eliminate left turns in front of oncoming traffic, making the intersection safer and more efficient. It also reduces the number of traffic light phases, allowing more cars to pass through the interchange. Additionally, drivers exiting the interstate onto local roadways can easily make right or left turns.

How much did the Fort Myers diverging diamond interchange cost?

The four-phase project that began in early 2021 cost $52.7 million to complete.

Why did the FDOT construct a diverging diamond in Fort Myers?

The FDOT’s mission of the project was to alleviate the cluster of congestion along almost 5,000 feet of Colonial Boulevard between Six Mile Cypress Parkway and Forum Boulevard.

The department wanted to fix the long-congested traffic quagmire that sees about 90,000 vehicles per day passing east, west, under or over Colonial and I-75.

Is the Fort Myers diverging diamond finished?

Yes, the diverging diamond at I-75 and Colonial Boulevard opened Monday, July 15.

The Florida Highway Patrol has several cruisers stationed to help drivers get used to the new traffic pattern. Monday is the first day the diverging diamond is open to motorists.

The project is expected to begin in 2025.
