Kill, directed by Nikhil Nagesh Bhat and produced by Karan Johar, Guneet Monga Kapoor, and Apoorva Mehta, has been loved for its intense and relentless action sequences, earning comparisons to The Raid for its brutal hand-to-hand combat scenes. The film’s unique setting on a train adds to the suspense and claustrophobic tension, with the majority of the action taking place in close quarters. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and received praise for its fight choreography and emotional depth, making it a crowd-pleaser. It has been described as India’s most brutal film, with each action scene delivering increasingly intense blows.
How Raghav Juyal bagged Kill? Casting director Anmol Ahuja explains why he was “perfect” choice
Anmol Ahuja, the casting director for the action-packed film says that it was an intricate process of assembling the cast for this highly anticipated movie. The casting journey was filled with challenges and unique experiences, particularly as the team sought new faces for key roles, including the female lead Tulika and the antagonist Fani.
He tells, “A significant number of auditions were conducted before finalizing the ensemble cast. This extensive search was necessary to find actors who could bring the required depth and diversity to their roles. The casting process was intricate, involving various permutations and combinations to ensure the best fit for each character. Characters like Tulika, Fani, and Viresh were especially interesting to audition for, as they demanded a wide range of emotions. These roles required actors who could seamlessly switch between different emotional states, adding layers to the narrative.”
Raghav Juyal as Fani is a breakthrough performance that is hailed by most critics. Anmol explains, “Casting for Fani’s world, particularly the gang of goons, was a unique challenge. Unlike the protagonist, who was a trained martial artist, the goons needed to reflect a variety of physicalities. Nearly 50 actors were cast to portray these characters, and they underwent action training to ensure their on-screen presence was both convincing and impactful. This attention to detail was crucial given the confined setting of the train, where every actor’s performance would be prominently visible. The character of Fani required an actor who could embody duality and unpredictability. After numerous auditions, Raghav Juyal’s innate spontaneity and unique spark stood out, making him the perfect choice for the role. His ability to portray complex emotions effortlessly added the necessary depth to Fani’s character.”
Casting Bay, Anmol’s company, has a knack for making movies look fresh and that is reflected in this film. He emphasized the importance of detailed casting, even for characters with minimal screen time. “Given that the majority of the film’s story unfolds within a few train compartments, it was essential to have a strong cast that could maintain the narrative’s intensity and authenticity. This meticulous approach ensured that every character, no matter how small their role, contributed meaningfully to the film’s overall impact,” he concludes.
