‘Indian 2’ saw a decent run at the box office during its first weekend. However, its performance at the global box office remained noteworthy. So much so that it ended up being the highest-grossing Tamil film of the year, surpassing the overall collection of ‘Maharaja’.
The Kamal Haasan-starrer collected around Rs 109 crore gross in three days, reported the trade website sacnilk. This is slightly higher than the Vijay Sethupathy-led film which earned around Rs 105 crore gross in its lifetime run worldwide. Back home, ‘Indian 2’ collected Rs 59.15 crore in the first weekend with the maximum business coming from the Tamil market.

- Friday: Rs 25.6 crore
- Saturday: Rs 18.2 crore
- Sunday: Rs 15.35 crore
- Total: Rs 59.15 crore
Out of this Rs 59.15 crore, Rs 41.55 crore is from the Tamil version alone. This is not surprising considering Kamal Haasan enjoys the status of being one of the most celebrated actors in Tamil cinema. ‘Indian 2’ reportedly grossed Rs 69 crore from overseas, and around Rs 40 crore from the domestic market.
However, despite all its records, the film seems to have performed lower than trade expectations. With Haasan’s stardom and director Shankar’s legacy, it was expected to at least surpass the benchmark of Rs 100 crore gross in the opening weekend in India. However, poor word-of-mouth made the film’s expected run impossible. Now that the film has entered its first week, it will be interesting to see if it manages to reach Rs 100 crore even by its second weekend.
