Some of the biggest hits of Bollywood in the last two decades have been remakes of South films. Of late, this trend has taken a beating as the South films began to have a Pan-India release in cinemas. Even if that doesn’t happen, the South blockbusters are dubbed in Hindi and are widely consumed on satellite and digital. Hence, the remakes find limited takers. Allu Aravind, one of the biggest producers in Telugu cinema and also the father of superstar Allu Arjun, spoke on this aspect with Mid-Day editor Mayank Shekhar during the South India Film Festival held earlier this year in March in Hyderabad.

Allu Aravind began by giving a headline-worthy statement, “The trend of remakes is going to die!” He continued, “I, myself, have made many remakes. I am not looking down upon them. But the business is no more viable thanks to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Aha and many other OTT platforms.”

Aravind explained his point with an example, “Suppose I have watched a Malayalam film and I want to remake it in Telugu. But that Malayalam film is on OTT and has become quite popular. A certain category of people has seen it already and are even recommending it to their friends. I feel that if I remake it, it won’t be well-received and it’ll be immediately compared to the original film. But when the previous film of the same director had been released, these things were not that (common).”

Allu Aravind mentioned the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Animal (2023) which was released not just in Hindi but also in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. He remarked, “Animal has been seen by every person of every language though it is made in Hindi. Hence, the business reason for remakes is coming down drastically. In a way, it’s good. The original films will now have a better place.”

At this point, Mayank Shekhar noted that Ajay Devgn-starrer Drishyam 2 (2022) was a huge blockbuster though the original Malayalam version was available on Amazon Prime Video. Allu Aravind simply smiled and replied, “Everything has an exception.”
